Which hinges suit heavy doors in practice?

In most heavy door applications, grade 13 ball bearing butt hinges are the starting point rather than a specialist upgrade. They are designed for higher loadings, more frequent use and more demanding environments than standard washered or light-duty hinges. A solid timber internal door, a tall entrance door to a flat or a heavily detailed feature door will often need this level of performance as a minimum.

That said, “heavy” is not one fixed category. A 44mm internal door in hardwood asks different things of a hinge than an oversized pivot-style front door, or a fire-rated communal entrance with a closer fitted. Parliament and projection hinges

Some heavy doors need to clear deep architraves, wall panelling or reveals. In those situations, a standard butt hinge may not project the door leaf far enough from the frame. Parliament hinges or other projection hinges can solve that problem, but they must still be checked for load capacity. Not every projecting hinge is suitable for a genuinely heavy leaf.

This is a common point where visual intent and technical reality meet. A door may need a wide throw for aesthetic or practical reasons, but the hinge still has to support the mass of the leaf without distortion or premature wear.

Rising butt hinges

These are not usually the answer for heavy doors. Rising butt hinges can be useful in specific traditional settings or where floor clearance is needed, but they are generally less appropriate for high-weight, high-use modern applications. Pivot systems

Weight is only one part of the calculation

You also need to know the door height, width and thickness, because leverage matters as much as mass. A tall, wide door places more stress on a hinge than a more compact leaf of similar weight.

Frequency of use matters too. There is also a tendency to separate the hinge from the rest of the opening. In reality, heavy doors need coordinated specification. Closers, intumescent requirements, hold-open devices, access control and frame construction all affect hinge choice.
