How to Choose Cabinet Hinges for a Refined Finish

A beautifully resolved cabinet can be undermined by a visible gap, a door that will not open past the adjacent wall, or a hinge that loses its adjustment after a season of use. Knowing how to choose cabinet hinges is therefore about more than selecting a mechanism that opens and closes. It is about coordinating door construction, cabinet geometry, movement, material, finish and the standard of use the furniture will receive.

For a single vanity or kitchen upgrade, the decision may be straightforward. Across a fitted kitchen, wardrobe wall or hospitality scheme, hinges quickly become a specification issue. A consistent choice protects the visual rhythm of reveals and ensures every door performs as intended from installation through to daily use.

How to choose cabinet hinges: start with the door position

The first question is how the door sits in relation to the cabinet. This determines the hinge type and, in particular, the hinge arm geometry or crank.

An overlay door covers the front edge of the cabinet side. Full-overlay doors are commonly used on frameless cabinet construction, where each door covers its own cabinet side and creates a clean, uninterrupted façade. A straight-arm concealed hinge is often appropriate here, but the exact overlay must still be checked against the mounting plate and drilling position.

An inset door sits within the cabinet opening, with the cabinet frame visible around all four sides. It requires a cranked hinge that brings the door into the opening while allowing adequate clearance as it moves. Inset work is less forgiving visually: inconsistent gaps are immediately apparent, so hinge adjustment and careful fitting matter as much as the hinge selection itself.

A half-overlay door is used where two doors share a central cabinet panel. Each door overlays only part of that panel, usually requiring a more heavily cranked hinge than a full-overlay application. This is a common point of error when replacing existing hinges. A hinge may look similar but produce the wrong overlay, leaving a central gap that is too wide or causing the doors to clash.

Do not select by the old hinge alone. Measure the existing door overlay, inspect the cabinet construction, and establish the desired reveal around the door. On bespoke joinery, the cabinetmaker's drawings should define these dimensions before hardware is ordered.

Choose the hinge family for the cabinet style

Concealed cup hinges, often called European hinges, are the standard choice for most contemporary kitchens, utility rooms, wardrobes and bathroom furniture. The hinge body is hidden when the door is closed, allowing the cabinetry, timber grain or painted finish to take visual priority. Most use a 35 mm cup drilled into the rear of the door, although smaller cups are available for narrower frames and lighter applications.

Their principal advantage is adjustability. A quality concealed hinge normally allows side-to-side, height and depth adjustment, enabling the installer to achieve precise, even gaps after the cabinets have been levelled. This is particularly valuable in long runs of joinery, where a few millimetres of variation can disrupt the whole elevation.

Traditional butt hinges remain a strong design choice for framed cabinets, period-inspired joinery and furniture where the hinge is intended to be seen. They bring a crafted, architectural quality, especially in brass, bronze or darker plated finishes. The trade-off is that they demand accurate setting out and offer little of the post-installation adjustment available with concealed systems.

Surface-mounted cabinet hinges can also suit heritage furniture, glazed doors and projects where drilling a concealed cup is impractical. Their knuckle becomes part of the visual language, so scale, finish and proportion deserve the same attention as handles and catches.

For unusual applications, such as lift-up doors, corner cabinets, pocket doors or bi-fold fronts, a conventional side hinge is unlikely to be enough. These applications need a dedicated mechanism, selected alongside the cabinet design rather than added at the end.

Check opening angle and clearance before ordering

A standard concealed hinge may open to around 110 degrees, which works well for most base units, wall cabinets and wardrobes. Yet the available opening angle is not a minor detail. It determines whether drawers can be pulled out beside an open door, whether a pull-out accessory can operate, and whether the door will strike a neighbouring wall, appliance or handle.

A wide-angle hinge can open to 155 or 165 degrees and is useful where full access is needed, particularly on pull-out storage, internal drawers or deep cupboards. It may need a specific mounting plate and can require more clearance around the hinge side of the door. More opening is not automatically better: in a tight passage, a restricted-angle hinge may prevent damage and make the room easier to use.

Consider the handle projection too. Two adjacent doors can clear each other at the hinge, then collide because the handles meet first. On handleless furniture, check the opening movement against adjacent panels, returns and appliances. For doors near a wall, a hinge with an integrated opening restrictor can be neater and more reliable than a separate buffer or improvised stop.

Match capacity to the door, not just the cabinet

Hinges carry the door, so door height, width, thickness and weight should guide the quantity and grade specified. A compact timber-framed glazed door and a tall, 22 mm painted MDF pantry front should not be treated as equivalent simply because both use a 35 mm cup.

As a practical rule, taller and heavier doors need more hinges. The exact number depends on the hinge manufacturer's load guidance, door dimensions, centre of gravity and expected frequency of use. A tall wardrobe door may need four or five hinges, while a modest base-unit door may require two or three. Follow the product data rather than relying on a generic rule of thumb, especially where stone, glass, metal or unusually thick timber is involved.

Hinge positioning matters as well. The top and bottom hinges should sit sufficiently in from the ends of the door to avoid weak corners, while intermediate hinges should be spaced evenly to control bowing and load. Heavy doors can gradually sag if too few hinges are used, even when each individual hinge appears substantial.

For commercial settings, rental properties and busy family kitchens, choose a hinge designed for regular operation and pair it with a durable mounting plate. The least expensive component is rarely economical if access is difficult after the joinery is installed.

Decide whether soft-close suits the application

Soft-close hinges bring a controlled, quiet close and protect painted, lacquered and timber door edges from repeated impact. For most premium residential cabinetry, they are now the expected choice. They are especially effective on vanity units, bedroom furniture and kitchens where a calm, considered feel is part of the brief.

There are exceptions. A very light or narrow door may not have enough momentum to engage a standard soft-close mechanism cleanly, although many quality ranges offer adjustment. Conversely, a large, heavy door may need more than one damped hinge to close consistently. If several hinges are fitted, some projects benefit from activating the soft-close function on only the number recommended by the manufacturer.

Push-to-open doors need a different approach. The catch mechanism, door weight and hinge spring strength must work together. A push-to-open front that rebounds or fails to latch is often a coordination issue, not a fault with one component. Specify the hinge and opening system as a matched arrangement wherever possible.

Treat finish as part of the wider hardware scheme

With concealed hinges, the finish is mostly hidden, but it still affects the impression when a door is open. Nickel-plated steel is a reliable, discreet choice for contemporary cabinetry. Black hinges can give darker interiors and black-framed joinery a more coherent appearance, while brass-toned or bronze options may suit cabinetry where every interior detail is deliberately considered.

Visible hinges need closer coordination. Match their tone thoughtfully with cabinet knobs, pulls, catches, tapware, switches and other nearby metalwork. Exact matching is not always essential, and can look overly prescribed. What matters is that finishes share a considered temperature and level of patina: warm brass with warm brass, or a dark bronze that sits comfortably alongside blackened steel.

In bathrooms, utility rooms and coastal properties, assess the environment as well as the appearance. Humidity and cleaning products place more demand on finishes. Select materials and coatings suited to the setting, and ensure the screws and mounting components are of comparable quality.

Confirm drilling, plates and adjustment details

A concealed hinge is only one part of the assembly. Its cup diameter, cup depth, drilling distance from the door edge, mounting plate height and screw fixing must all be compatible with the door and cabinet. A 35 mm cup is common, but it is not a universal instruction. Thin doors, narrow rails and framed constructions may need an alternative solution.

The mounting plate influences overlay and position, so it should be selected with the hinge rather than treated as an interchangeable accessory. This becomes critical when replicating an existing arrangement or working with face-frame cabinetry. Ordering a technically correct hinge with the wrong plate can produce incorrect gaps and waste installation time.

Before committing to a full order, prepare a sample door or test cabinet. Check the reveal, opening angle, soft-close action, handle clearance and adjustment range in the actual material. On larger projects, record the selected hinge, plate, quantity and drilling detail in the ironmongery schedule so that joiner, installer and procurement team are working from the same information.

The best cabinet hinge is rarely the most visible element in a room. It is the one that gives every door a precise line, a confident movement and a finish that remains composed under daily use.
