Where the rails are quite narrow, placing the knob fully within the stile rather than drifting into the rail often looks cleaner. If the knob is too large for the frame proportions, placement becomes awkward. In that case, the issue may not be position at all - it may be scale.

On slab doors, there is more freedom, but also less forgiveness. Because the face is uninterrupted, every fixing point is more apparent. A modest inset from the top or bottom outer corner usually suits modern cabinetry best, especially when trying to preserve sharp, architectural lines.

Practical dimensions worth checking on site
Standard placement ranges are useful, but cabinetry is rarely standard once a project becomes bespoke. Before drilling anything, it is worth checking a few dimensions against the actual room and the actual product.
Knob projection matters more than many people expect. A large projecting knob close to an adjacent wall, appliance housing or return panel can create awkward clearance issues. Likewise, on corner cabinets or back-to-back doors in a utility space, placement must allow comfortable use without collision.
You should also consider who will be using the joinery. In family kitchens, lower wall cabinets may call for slightly more reachable positioning. In high-end dressing rooms or formal furniture, visual consistency may take precedence, provided the result is still practical.

There are projects where the usual measurements simply do not produce the best result. That is common in bespoke joinery, oversized pantry doors, furniture pieces and highly symmetrical interiors.
If a cabinet door has a particularly wide stile, centring the knob on the stile may be more important than keeping to a generic edge inset. If drawer fronts are unusually tall, optical centring may look better than mathematical centring. If cabinetry forms part of a heritage-style room, a slightly more traditional placement can support the architecture. In a sharper contemporary interior, tighter and more disciplined positioning usually works better.
