A beautifully made kitchen, dressing room or fitted furniture scheme can lose its precision through hardware that is too slight, too long or awkwardly positioned. This cabinet hardware sizing guide sets out the practical measurements behind well-proportioned knobs, pulls and handles, so the finished joinery feels considered at every touchpoint.
There is no single universal size. Cabinet hardware should respond to the scale of the door or drawer, the weight of the panel, its use, and the visual language of the room. A slim handle may suit a narrow framed cabinet in a refined utility room, while a wide drawer in a contemporary kitchen often calls for a longer pull with a more substantial grip.
Start with the cabinet, not the handle
Hardware is often selected from a sample board before the cabinetry dimensions are finalised. That can work for establishing a finish direction, but final sizing should follow the approved joinery drawings. Measure the width and height of each door and drawer front, then look at the whole elevation rather than a single unit in isolation.
A small knob can look purposeful on a 300 mm-wide wall cabinet door, yet appear undersized on a 900 mm pantry door. Similarly, a 320 mm pull can give a broad drawer the right visual weight, but may dominate a modest bedside cabinet. Scale is the first consideration, and it is as much about the surrounding furniture as the individual front.
For mixed banks of drawers, decide whether the hardware should form a quiet, consistent rhythm or visibly reflect the changing drawer widths. Both approaches can be successful. Using one pull length across several drawers creates a disciplined architectural appearance. Increasing the pull length as drawers become wider can look more expressive, provided the sequence is deliberate rather than incremental by accident.
Cabinet hardware sizing guide: choosing pull length
As a starting point, designers commonly select a pull that is approximately one-third of the drawer or door width. For example, a 600 mm drawer may take a pull around 160 mm to 224 mm long, depending on its profile and the desired presence. This is a useful proportion, not a rule.
Longer pulls suit clean-lined, contemporary cabinetry and make wide, heavy drawers easier to operate. They also create a strong horizontal or vertical graphic across the joinery. Shorter pulls leave more negative space around the hardware and are often better suited to traditional framed doors, compact cabinets and schemes where the cabinetry itself is intended to take visual priority.
Handle lengths are usually described by fixing centres, not their overall length. A pull described as 160 mm centres has its screw holes 160 mm apart, but the handle itself will extend beyond those points. Always check both dimensions. The overall projection matters too: a generous stand-off can improve finger clearance, while an overly deep projection may be intrusive in a narrow kitchen passage or compact cloakroom.
A practical guide to common drawer widths
For drawers up to around 400 mm wide, a knob, a short pull or a compact T-bar usually feels balanced. On fronts from roughly 450 mm to 700 mm, 128 mm, 160 mm or 224 mm centres are frequently appropriate choices. Wider drawer fronts may suit 256 mm or 320 mm centres, or two matching pulls positioned symmetrically.
Two pulls are particularly effective on very wide drawers, appliance housings and large larder doors. They reduce the effort required to open a heavy front and avoid a single central handle looking isolated. However, double pulls introduce more fixings and demand precise alignment. If the cabinetry is intentionally minimal, one well-scaled long pull may produce the cleaner result.
The shape of the hardware affects these decisions. A fine bar pull can be longer without feeling heavy. A broad, solid bronze handle may need less length because its material and profile already carry visual weight. Recessed handles and integrated edge pulls follow a different logic altogether, as their sizing is defined by the detail of the door construction and the available finger space.
Knobs, T-bars and smaller cabinet doors
Knobs are measured by diameter or width. For many standard cabinet doors, a diameter between 25 mm and 38 mm provides a comfortable, restrained proportion. Larger knobs, often 40 mm to 50 mm or more, can work well on pantry doors, freestanding furniture and deep drawer fronts where a more tactile focal point is wanted.
T-bars sit between a knob and a pull. Their compact form makes them useful where a conventional pull would be too long, but a round knob feels too decorative or difficult to grip. They work particularly well on narrow drawers, tall doors and modern joinery with a linear design language.
Do not judge knobs only by their face diameter. The projection and the clearance behind the knob determine how comfortable it is to use. A low-profile knob may look neat but can be frustrating on a heavy drawer, particularly where fingertips cannot get behind it easily. A sample fitted to an offcut of the actual door thickness will reveal far more than a product image or loose showroom sample.
Position hardware for use and alignment
On drawers, pulls and knobs are normally centred horizontally. Vertically, they are usually placed around the centre line of the drawer front, although shallow top drawers can benefit from hardware set slightly higher to maintain a consistent visual line across a larger drawer stack.
On hinged cabinet doors, the usual position is near the opening edge, rather than centred on the panel. For upper cabinets, place the pull or knob towards the lower corner. For base cabinets, position it towards the upper corner. This makes the door intuitive to open and keeps the hardware in a natural reach zone.
The exact inset from the door edge depends on the handle style, door profile and adjacent details. A typical starting point is 40 mm to 60 mm from the edge to the centre of the fixing or knob. On framed cabinetry, hardware is often aligned with the centre of the stile or rail. On slab doors, a consistent margin to the edge is generally the more contemporary choice.
Tall cabinet doors require additional care. A handle positioned at standard upper-cabinet height can be too high for daily use, while a perfectly centred pull can feel impractical. Consider the primary user and the cabinet function. A pantry door may be best served by a long vertical handle with its grip centred around a comfortable hand height, rather than its geometric centre.
Check fixing centres before drilling
Fixing centres are the measurement between the two screw holes of a pull. They must be exact. A 128 mm-centre handle cannot be substituted for a 160 mm-centre model without redrilling the front, which may leave visible holes or compromise a veneered, lacquered or painted finish.
Before production drilling begins, prepare a hardware schedule that records the product, finish, overall dimensions, fixing centres, quantity, handedness where relevant, and the cabinet type receiving it. This is especially valuable where a project combines knobs, pulls, edge handles and larger appliance pulls across several rooms.
Use a drilling template or jig rather than measuring each front individually. Marking out by hand is slow and can lead to cumulative inconsistencies, particularly on tall banks of cabinetry. Protect finished surfaces with masking tape where appropriate, drill from the face side with a suitable sharp bit, and test the first installation before committing to every front.
Allow for clearances, appliances and real-life use
Proportion alone is not enough. Cabinet hardware must clear adjacent doors, walls, worktops and appliance fronts. A pull that projects heavily from a drawer near an island corner can become a daily inconvenience. Cup pulls need space above them for fingers, while wide bar handles need sufficient room at each end so they do not interfere with neighbouring fronts.
Where appliances are involved, prioritise function. Integrated fridge, freezer and dishwasher doors are heavier than standard cabinet doors and may require specialist appliance pulls, appropriate fixing methods and confirmation from the appliance and kitchen manufacturers. Decorative cabinet hardware is not automatically suitable for these loads.
Consider the finish as part of the scale decision. Polished chrome and satin stainless steel tend to read lighter, while aged brass, bronze and matt black can feel more pronounced against pale joinery. A dark 224 mm pull may have greater visual impact than a polished pull of the same size. Samples should therefore be reviewed against the cabinet colour, worktop, lighting and other architectural ironmongery.
Create a coordinated hardware language
A project feels more resolved when cabinet hardware relates to lever handles, hinges, window fittings, switches and bathroom accessories. Exact matching is not always necessary, and sometimes it is undesirable. What matters is that finishes, edge details and levels of visual weight are coordinated.
For a minimal scheme, slim linear cabinet pulls may sit naturally alongside contemporary lever handles and discreet door furniture. In a warmer, more tactile interior, knurled knobs or solid metal pulls can echo the material depth of the wider ironmongery palette.
